Search Engine Optimization has to be the easiest business in the world to get into. I don’t have to make money with my site; I only have to convince you that I’m able to make money with your site. If I fail I still walk away with a couple thousand in my pocket, after all there are no guarantees, at least not for you, for me there is because I get my money upfront.
Most clients lack a real understanding of search engine optimization and I can therefore rank you for some crazy keywords and you’ll be thinking I’ve done a great job. If you ask why you’re not making money I’ll just say that has to do with conversion and send you to my web design department or my buddy down the road and make another couple thousands.
You’ll be out of business before the end of the year and I want have to hear from you anymore.
What Is Search Engine Optimization?
The idea is to increase your traffic with folks looking for what it is you’re selling by way of the search engines. But that’d be a bit lame so I’ll take it a little further.
My job as a search engine marketer should be to increase your profits and the amount of money you’re making so you can continue to pay me.
The truth of the matter is that I don’t give a crap about you however, I don’t want there to be a lack of desire, money or reason for you to pay me and therefore will work my but off to make sure on payday I’m the first one getting paid.
What does this mean?
1. I don’t just have to rank the site but I’ve got to make the sale.
2. I’ve got to research your keywords and figure out what keywords will drive both traffic and conversion.
3. I’ve got to make sure that you’re site will convert the traffic.
4. I’m not tracking results and keywords so I can write a report for you, I’m doing it because I need the site to produce and income and fast.
5. I’m not trying to rank the site for a couple keywords but rather a couple thousand.
As a search engine optimizer I should know that better keyword rankings is only the first step and that Meta tags, title tags and on page optimization should be nothing more than the steps taken while I’m putting the real plan into play.
I need to study and understand your competition to the point that I know what their thinking and what they’ll do next, even before they know.
My goal is to send you so much work that’ll you’ll have to build more buildings to house the employees you’ll need to hire just to keep up. However, the desire alone is not enough; it takes dedication, skill and an understanding of how the search engines work.
